When you’re in Southern California you have to take part in one of the favorite local past times – weekend brunch! Just about everyone I know looks forward to gathering with family and friends on the weekend for delicious foods and a main staple of brunching; bottomless mimosas.
If you’re not familiar with Tortilla Jo’s, it’s located in the center of Downtown Disney in Anaheim, California. Whether you’re on vacation or local to the area, it’s a great stop to have a memorable brunch experience. Every Saturday and Sunday from 9:00am to noon, Tortilla Jo’s serves up fresh twists on classical Mexican cuisine from their amazing brunch menu.
To start off with we had the classic chips and salsa as well as a beautiful plate of fresh fruits. I’m pretty sure I ate most of the raspberries and pineapple, but I had a hard time not filling up on chips and salsa too. I can’t resist it! If you really want to upgrade your brunch experience, order the tableside guacamole. Like the name suggests, they make it at your table. It’s my favorite guacamole!
Another palate pleaser is the Apple Spring Salad. It tastes as good as it looks. It’s apples, jicama, mango, watermelon radish, watercress, toasted marcona almonds, oats, dried blueberries, and a lime and vanilla yogurt dressing. Such an amazing flavor combination, and I think it would be great for kids too.
Probably my favorite of the entire menu is the Cinnamon French Toast. This dish really takes french toast to another level. Brioche bread is dipped in a cinnamon french toast batter, cooked to perfection, then topped with cajeta syrup, candied walnuts, and a generous dollop of horchata whipped cream. Yes. Horchata. Whipped. Cream.
They could have stopped there, but they didn’t. They also took Chile Relleno to the next level by stuffing a poblano chile with Machaca (shredded beef and scrambled eggs) and topping it with a smoked tomato salsa. This Machaca con Huevos Chile Relleno is two of my favorite Mexican dishes in one!
Last but not least one of the most recognizable Mexican food brunch dishes, Huevos Rancheros. No twist needed here, because with dish, simple is best. In between two corn tortillas you have refried beans and two perfectly cooked sunny side up eggs. The whole thing is topped off with a salsa ranchera, cotija cheese, served with papas a la mexicana.
Oh, but you can’t leave without some dessert. How about a plate of Mini Churros and Apple Chimichangas. Topped with whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate syrup, of course!
Tortilla Jo’s brunch is perfect for a girl’s day, a family get-together, or a nice morning with your significant other. I’m definitely bringing my husband in soon because I know he’ll love the french toast and chile relleno dishes. You’re guaranteed to find something on the menu that you love, and you might find a new favorite too!
