I’m sharing three great recipes for guilt-free sparkling drinks, as well as some great self-care so you can kick back and enjoy Summer like you should! Grab a snack and read on to find out how to make an amazing sparkling mint and lime refresher, plus two more delicious drinks!
After having four kids, I started to kind of let myself get away from myself. I don’t like saying “let myself go” because it sounds so negative, but I really just stopped treating myself. And not just buying myself stuff, but things that I should really be doing like eating enough food, drinking enough water, brushing my hair. You know, normal things that you’re supposed to do. It’s a constant struggle for me to find the balance between keeping my four small humans alive and well, and keeping myself looking like a sane person.
At the beginning of Summer I vowed to spend at least one hour per day doing something nice for myself. I also promised myself I wouldn’t skip meals or even forbid myself to eat a treat. I know, it’s not really a diet-friendly plan, but it is a mental health-friendly plan. It’s more important for me to be happy and healthy, than to look bikini-ready. (And let’s face it, if you are wearing a bikini, then you’re bikini-ready.)
One hour is a long time to spend on just yourself when you’re working from home and taking care of a small litter of children who are so demanding there might as well be a dozen of them. So I started taking advantage of the child care at my gym. I grab my stuff, snacks and drinks for everyone – including myself, and I have three child-free hours I can use to get some work done. It’s not a bad office if you ask me.
I don’t have an unlimited bank account or a full-time nanny, so most of things in my daily self-care routine have to be affordable and easy to do at home during nap time or after bed time. Once in a while I can sneak out of the house alone when my husband or mom are home, so I take full advantage of that.
- Take a leisurely walk around the neighborhood or your favorite trail or park while listening to some calming music.
- Give yourself a cute manicure or pedicure. Or both.
- Make a decadent dessert just for yourself, and eat it while watching an hour of your favorite guilty pleasure TV show.
- Take a looooong bath. With bubbles and candles and the works.
- Recharge with a nice nap.
- After a shower or bath, take the time to dry and style your hair and do your makeup.
- Grab a coffee at your favorite coffee shop and enjoy it while reading a gossip magazine.
- Find a cozy spot and read a good book.
- Call a friend that you haven’t talked to in a long time and catch up.
- Get a spa treatment. (You deserve it!)
Another way I love to unwind is with one of these amazing fruit-infused sparkling drinks. They are all-natural, guilt-free, and 100% delicious. They’re also ridiculously easy to make, even though they look extra fancy. It doesn’t take a lot to impress me, but I think you’ll be impressed too.
My first, and absolute favorite, is the Sparkling Mint and Lime Refresher. It’s a super-refreshing drink that has no alcohol, no sugar, and nothing artificial at all. When I make it I actually have to make two, because my oldest loves it so much too.
To make the Sparkling Mint and Lime Refresher, take a handful of mint leaves and chop them up finely.
Put the chopped mint into your favorite glass, and squeeze in half of a lime.
Now is the fun part. Take a small wooden spoon, or the handle of one, and muddle the lime and mint together really well to release all of that minty goodness.
Then, just pour in some all-natural lime-flavored sparkling water.
Add ice if desired and garnish with more lime and mint.
If you prefer something a little more tropical, you have to try the Pineapple & Coconut Sparkolada! It just sounds fancy, right? Well it’s also delicious, and if you close your eyes hard enough, it’s almost as if you’re laying on the beach while enjoying this refreshing and hydrating treat.
This one is even easier than the first. Can you believe that? Take some frozen pineapple chunks and thaw them out, then dump them – juice and all – into a glass. You can also use fresh, or even canned, as long as there’s no added sugars.
Then add some coconut flavored sparkling water…
And add ice if desired, and garnish with a slice of pineapple and a cute straw.
Last of all, but certainly not least is the Strawberry Basil Sparkler. This one requires a tiny bit of prep work, but it’s oh-so worth it.
Start by chopping up a few ripe strawberries and putting them in a bowl with a squeeze of lemon juice. Let them set for a bit, even overnight. This will help bring out the sweetness of the strawberries without having to add any sugar. After they’ve sit for a bit, chop up a about 5 basil leaves (more or less, depending on your taste,) and add both the basil and strawberries into a cup. You can add more lemon juice if you would like, and then just smush it all together.
Add your sparkling water. (I like sparkling lemon with this!)
Finish by adding some ice and a fancy strawberry garnish.
I love pairing my delicious drinks with a little snack. On my last run to Costco, I picked up these great Ready Pac brand Ready Snax.
They come in a 4-pack, and each snack tray only has 150 calories, so it’s just as guilt-free as these awesome drinks. They’re a great grab-and-go snack if you find yourself running out the door last minute a lot like I do!
Remember, it’s all about self-care this Summer, so #treatyoself!
